What We Do: Xining Children's Home

Christian Action UK supports our first Children’s Home and Rehabilitation Centre in Qinghai’s capital, Xining.  Xining Rehabilitation Centre and  Children’s Home have become national models for best practice in the care of orphaned and abandoned children, and particularly children with disabilities. We were acclaimed as one of the ‘top ten children’s homes in China’ by the Chinese government. We now incorporate a training centre in the Home where students in Social Work come as part of their syllabus.

The Children:

150 children, the majority of whom are disabled, are cared for at Xining Children’s Home. Most of the children have been abandoned by their birth parents.

Family environment:

The children live in small 'family' groups in a home environment with a dedicated house parent. We promote fostering locally and strive to place children with loving foster families, who can then use our rehabilitation facilities together.

Rehabilitation for disabled children:

Part of Xining Children’s Home is dedicated to rehabilitation. Founded in 2007, this is the first ever Rehabilitation Centre in Qinghai province. Here we provide occupational therapy, physiotherapy and special education not only to the disabled children living at the Home, but also local disabled children and their families from the community. Children and their parents learn techniques with the therapists that they can practice at home and use to alleviate the difficulties in their daily lives.

School:

Each child has their own tailored education programme. The Home incorporates special classrooms specifically equipped to particular learning needs. If it's possible, children go to the local school.

Health:

Many of the children have significant health needs so heath care is a vital part of our service to the children. All the children see our in-house doctor or nurse daily and we fundraise for vital surgery for individual children.
